torque converter?

Havent scanned it yet, but friend has a tranny that has gears at first start up, then as it warms up, loses them. Has the imfamous whine at park and neutral. Fluid is dark.. guessing t.c.? 150k and is a hd tranny..

I'd drop the pan first and change the filter, and pull the side cover and replace the pressure control solenoid. Do not lose the fluid. You'll want to look through it for metal particles and excess clutch material. It's normal to find a little, but if there's a thick layer in the pan, it's time for a rebuild. The pressure control solenoid is a known failure on these transmissions and it's relatively easy to replace. Once you do these 2 things, put the old fluid back in with 1/2 a bottle of Lucas Trans Fix. This will buy your friend some time with the trans while you locate him a new one.
